It is the one Gundam series that realized the only true Robot animus are Super Robot animus. All Real Robots have ever contributed to the genre are whiny autists as pilots (which then weaseled their way back into Super Robots thanks to Shinji Ikari)

So a Gundam is not a "super robot"?
I mean, it's technically not a robot at all but what makes it not super?

They try to tell military war dramas, instead of just having goofy robots pummel each other with rocket punches and crotch-mounted flamethrowers.

'Super Robot' genre is basically like Transformers where they come from alien planets or lost civilisations or something, are powered by mystical energy sources and are basically superpowered sentient beings

'Real Robot', which Gundam pioneered, is when they're basically like tanks or aircraft or some other military machine. They often refer to 'mass production', the mecha often carry weapons with finite ammo like machine guns. They're not sentient, they don't come from alien planets or lost civilisations, they don't talk or shit like that. It's basically imagining what it would be like if, for some reason, the various militaries of the world decided to make what amounts to walking tanks.

Gundam itself has sort of bent these rules here or there but generally sticks to idea of these being mass produced, non-sentient military machines.

With most of the rule-bending being about how the mass-produced models are useless next to the special snowflake prototype models that get all the cool shit and can run circles around everything else while having literal plot armor and shit.

That's not what I was talking about. A lot of prototype military shit ends up being better than the mass produced version because the military is looking to produce stuff that is cost effective while still being fit for its intended purpose. So, if anything, that part is very realistic.

Speaking of 3D, I've just checked out Gundam: The Origin aka The Adventures of Young Char and his Kawaii Sister.
I actually liked that one a lot, so much so that I bought the Blu-ray. Gundam weebs tell me that it's not canon. For whatever reason, I just can't get into Tomino's anime. I did watch the three movie compilations of the OG series and liked it OK in that abridged format.

Votoms will always be my favorite Real Robot series.
