While I think Colbert did a bad job, or more accurately got incredibly lazy; I don't totally buy the argument that it was for financial reasons.

The show is probably more trouble, financial or otherwise, than its worth, don't get me wrong; but the ratings decline all but certainly started during the ass end of Dave's tenure as he looked more and more bored with that specific format. Not to mention Colbert got a decade afterwards AND wasn't canned during lockdowns.

I do think Trump's FCC got mad, which I suppose does merit some investigation. That's all irrelevant however to the truth, which is Colbert's been a great disappointment.

Someone posted on Twitter that Colbert's show actually costted a lot of money to produce and it was being a money drain for a long time, which it's probably true.

CBS isn't replacing Colbert as host. They're killing the show completely, so I can believe it was about profit. Nobody, young or old. watches this shit anymore. We've talked about that here a million times.

One viral clip every few years can't be enough to justify a generously paid professional host and a production team of multiple dozens in some glitzy Manhattan theater. Not in a world where Joe Rogan not only has a larger audience, but much smaller overhead costs.

Seriously, an hour of random cat videos might be more profitable than Stephen Colbert interviewing Pete Davidson for six minutes in between a monologue and other comedy bits that a staff of fifteen writers cobbled together.

I'm just adamant that they've likely been losing money before Colbert even got the gig and the timing is sus.

Maybe there's a bit of sunk cost fallacy and the Paramount thing was the straw that broke the camel's back. The show was only even established to keep Dave on the air after all.
