I loved Shrek 1 and 2 as a kid. I meant to rewatch them as a manchild but keep forgetting to.
Shrek 4 is supposed to be about his midlife crisis. This is supposed to hit home with Shrek's aging audience. I never saw it.

Shrek 1 is one of the better Dreamworks offerings if you can tolerate their style (not as good as Megamind, though).
Shrek 2 is legit one of the best sequels.
Shrek 3 is lame. I guess that one was about learning to be an actual adult because Shrek was about to become father, but at the same time the plot was about resetting everything back to the swamp by handing off adult responsibilities to some teenager, so there's a bit of mixed messaging going on. Also it introduces a bunch of Arthurian characters, but does absolutely nothing with them aside from lame high school jokes.
Shrek 4 on the other hand...

Shrek 4 is supposed to be about his midlife crisis.

"Being a dad is tough. I wanna go back to when I was alone."
"I can do that for you! Only temporarily, of course..."
"Great! No strings attached, I assume?"
"Yeah. Sure..."

Also easily the safest sequel ever because it erases itself from continuity. Feels more like a story arc from a series, honestly.
Also where the fuck did all those other ogres come from in that alternate timeline? And why would the main villain be hunting them down if ogres, according to the previous movies, love nothing more than being grumpy bastards living alone in a swamp where nobody will annoy them.
