Weebshit Thread
Re: Weebshit Thread
Finished Psycho.Pass s1 now. Was great. Ended not THAT great, though, But a neat ending, good enough,

I can count on my hand the amount of Japanese media that had decent endings.
Re: Weebshit Thread
I don't understand why the Japanese don't know how to write a decent fucking ending to an anime series. Psycho Pass' ending was disappointing because the villain had a similar problem Heath Ledger's Joker had, he was built up as too invincible and cunning to be realistically defeated, though compared to most anime endings it was okay. But man it was good, not "good for anime" but legit good. It's one of the few anime that could actually translate well to live action since it's pretty much a detective/cop show without too much weird animu shit.

I think one of the main issues is that most of the shounenshit writers get such a massive hard-on from power escalation that they stop listening to reason. So you keep running into situations where the final villain is a doubleplusgod (doubleplus because he probably already killed whatever god-equivalents there are in the setting) who can bend reality and causality to his will without even lifting a finger. Fighting a main protagonist whose power is usually some flavor of "I hit really hard!".How dafuq do you write yourself out of that?
One might also question why a heavily Carribean-flavored video game features an ancient jungle temple guarded by ninjas. But then again, they're ninjas. Nobody subverts your expectations quite like them.Kugelfisch wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 12:52 amI had Maui Mallard on the SNES. Earthworm Jim puts it quite well when it comes to the feel. The soundtrack and overall sound design are something I still remember vividly. I had no fucking clue why Donald was a ninja but I thought it was cool. Doesn't reach Donkey Kong music, though.

But Psycho Pass isn't shounenshit, it's cyberpunk detective story. Which is what every cyberpunk story is.VoiceOfReasonPast wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 4:06 pmI think one of the main issues is that most of the shounenshit writers get such a massive hard-on from power escalation that they stop listening to reason. Plague of Gripes made a bretty good video about shounenshit power levels, actually. The focus is on DBZ which is the worst about it, but it applies to shounenshit in general.

Wikipedia claims Psycho Pass is in the shounen genre, so that's the example I used. Dunno how crazy they get with the cybertech in there, though.

Not all shounen is battle shounen you dingus. Plus PP is anime original bullshit.
Re: Weebshit Thread
Well the whole concept is that they can scan people's brainwaves and detect when mental instability is going to lead to possible criminal activity before it happens, so people are sentenced to "treatment" before they commit a crime, and brain scanners are everywhere to help the police do this.VoiceOfReasonPast wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 6:11 pmWikipedia claims Psycho Pass is in the shounen genre, so that's the example I used. So while everyone isn't a cyborg, the tech is central to the narrative.
I'd also classify it more as seinen than shounen. A bit more mature and subtle. It certainly isn't the kind of fightin' animu you're referring to with power levels.

Re: Weebshit Thread
But it does have the impossible villain.
Original animu (do not steal) can suck, too. And just because there are no planet-busting lazor beams doesn't mean it'll avoid similar pitfalls. They are but different manifestations of the same problem, a sort of meta-villain behind every keikaku.Guest wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 6:25 pmNot all shounen is battle shounen you dingus.
