It was directed by Frank Miller, an old drunk who draws shitty comics. Given that, it's a miracle it turned out as good as it did.veris leta facies wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 6:46 pmThe Spirit (2008)
Woah. It's rare to see anything this stupid done on such a large budget. What exactly was this supposed to be about? Was this something self aware, deliberately fucking silly parody of Sin City? Was this deliberately made so totally idiotic? The script and dialogue were like written by a ten-year-old with a developmental disability. The authors of this movie also had no idea about the rhythm and dynamics of the film, almost all the scenes dragged for far too long and no matter how crazy the imagery was that the film offered, it was still quite fucking boring. The movie is also PG-13, so no gore, no tits, just lame childish garbage. It was still somewhat interesting to watch through this total turkey, just to wonder how an utter pile of shit like this has ever gotten funding.

Oh, that one. Apparently they wanted to capitalize on the success of the Sin City by making another comic adapation in the same style.
Either Frank MIller did a hell of a lot of drugs before filming, or he didn't actually know anything about the source material and decided to just throw random shit at the screen.

Frank Miller was very Close friends with Will Eisner Due to Will being his fucking mentor and showed him the ropes to making good comic books!
The problem with the film and frank miller's involvement lies in 2 factors:
1) This was past the point where frank went form godhood-like status to his quality of his work plummet all the way down to being pure shit
2) Frank tried to Instill his sense of style and presentation and loss what made The original Spirt work!
Re: Movie Thread
3) Miller had never really directed a movie before. Yeah he's credited as a co-director of Sin City but Robert Rodriguez did most of the actual work

All I can say is that Will Eisner chose the right time to die (3 years before the movie's release, btw).

I rewatched the original Friday the 13th after many years. Whilst it is a flawed film, I have to say that I actually quite enjoyed it. The first half is very good - pure summer tranquility punctuated by the occasional grisly murder. It's when it gets dark and the teens start getting properly picked off one by one that the film gets dull. There should've been a moment of realisation like in Elm Street, where the kids figure out what's going on and try to find the killer or at least achieve some objective instead of endless wandering. Carpenter had the skill to keep the tension going throughout - Cunningham didn't. His main strength as a director(at least judging from this) is naturalism. The location is lived-in, the actors come across as genuine, if slightly cheesy, individuals. Once they stopped interacting with each other and we lost the scenery, I wasn't invested anymore.
Fortunately, the ending is redeemed by the arrival of Betsy Palmer, whose performance kicks things into high gear. Even leaving aside the obvious reverse-Norman Bates aspect of mrs Voorhees, it's like she walked out of some Hitchcock movie with her manic acting and the way the camera is utilised during her fight with Alice. Great stuff.
Overall, I'd recommend it, but only if you have the patience for the slow pace and don't mind some silliness.

I hate agreeing with Rushy, but I have to in this instance. I saw the movie a couple years ago because I'd never bothered with the series. I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I enjoyed the first half, which was suitably creepy and atmospheric. But the "action" horror 2nd half seemed kinda hokey and lame. I liked the prosaic killer, but wasn't sold on how the reveal was handled. Felt a little Scooby Doo to me.
For slasher films, Halloween and Hellraiser are probably the best. That's if you consider Hellraiser a slasher film at all. But at a certain point, the horror genre gets split into a billion subgenres, so who the hell even knows. In broad strokes, Alien, Land of the Dead, Scanners and The Thing sit at the pinnacle for me (of the broad horror genre), and then you have the stuff that's just not quite at that tier, like Halloween, Hellraiser, Evil Dead series, The Descent, a bunch of the lesser Cronenbergs and The Omen. Amazing movies, but not personally valued by me as much. Friday the 13th has an amazing premise, setting and an iconic character, but it didn't grab me like some other classic horror franchises did. And it doesn't have Donald Pleasance in it.
Everyone knows the best horror movie is Total Recall anyway:
