And I dunno if they introduced this ability because they thought some jumps would be "too hard" for modern gamers, or if they deliberately added some dumb gatekeeping (Oh no, this platform is a few pixels too high!)

The latter. Calling the defining level characteristic of Metroid of blocking off areas of the map unless you have certain abilities "dumb gatekeeping" is a true double digit IQ take.
