I've only seen the death counter decrease for beating mini bosses and the occasional rando going super sayan.

I'll go and farm the first level for a bit now. I want to get some skills unlocked and get up to baseline competency. Especially crowds are still an issue for me.

Ah, my bad.

EDIT: Okay I think my favorite level gotta be the museum.
It's probably the fastest to beat on repeated tries, since if you have the elevator keys you can skip straight to the boss fight.
It's also trippy af towards the end, and the boss is a top yandere waifu.

Managed to reach the Museum at age 29 with barely any shortcuts. Despite thinking I could possibly do better, I'm a bit proud of that.

Current record with shortcuts is age 27 at the Tower. So far I always die at least once against Sean's disciples because I keep underestimating them (Sean himself is not that big of a deal though since his attacks are pretty easy to dodge unless he does that poke which is way faster than anything else he does). The remaining deaths usually come at the hand of Phase 1 Kuroki (dodging her attacks is a lot harder since she's faster and uses more sweeps).
Phase 2 Kuroki is pretty lulzy if you've learned Weapon Catch, since you can just yank her kunai out of the air and throw them back at her.

I probably should focus more on pushing and throwing people around against crowds since you can stun at least two enemies that way if your aim is good.

I've been replaying bayonetta 1.

Combat is excellent but the QTEs, platforming and puzzles all suck shit. Kamiya is a hackfraud who loves his fucking maymay minigames and distractions. I just finished level 5 and my god, the falling bridge with the dragon was hell. I don't boot up an action game to platform on a time limit like I'm playing Super Meat Boy. In 3d with a shit camera. I'd rather the entire level was a series of arena fights until the Jeanne battle.

Had to cleanse the palate after that with some NG2. Started up a new game and beelined to the claws. Claws with fiend ryu or biometal ryu are pretty fucking dope. We'll never get a guyver game but vanilla NG2 has excellent costumes.

I do my best to avoid engaging Jeanne in a button-mash QTE for a reason. I swear the PC port doesn't register your input fast enough to actually have a consistent way of winning.
I vastly prefer DMC4+5 with Nero's "Push single button to beat the shit out of stunned boss" system.

(palm strike or throw ->) Chase trip is probably the most important special attack in the game because you can reposition while knocking down and staggering enemies. It makes some encounters much easier.

Also, it's situational but you can one hit environment throw kill in some places.
