Publisher CMON (who publishes a mix of original and licensed board games) is threatening to do the business equialent of holding their breaths if the tarrifs keep being a thing. Good luck with that.

This should vindicate the wave of de-OGL-ified D&D retroclones that have done sweeping renamings to various things to make them less D&D.

So the newest/upcoming update to 5e's System Reference Document is seeing these odd naming changes (which might be straight out of one of those de-OGL-ified retroclones):


Why are they doing this? Because they're trying to trademark these two names:


The "Deck of Many Things" and the "Orb of Dragonkind" have existed under these names since the 3.X SRD - and the 5e has also been famously released under Creative Commons to appease the masses after the last time they tried to fuck over the OGL.
This will not go over well.

They may or may not send the Pinkertons to 3rd party publishers who dare to refer to public domain D&D artifacts by their proper name.

Or they have the weird idea to be more "protective" of their IPs years too late.

EDIT: To make this even dumber, there has already been a number of 3rd party products called "Deck of Many Things", as the artifact lends itself well to an actual physical deck of cards.
