Oh, YouTube Red will definitely fail. But I guess they figured it was better to try something with a potential higher profit margin and fail than to keep operating at a loss/breaking even doing the social media shitpost vidya community. They're this huge fucking website, but it's not like they're making a massive profit from it (which is what every business wants.) Google will keep trying to change and modify YouTube for max profits and eventually they'll have to start deleting those let's play channels that upload 100 videos a week of uncompressed shit.

If they want to make money from Youtube, maybe they should just reduce the overhead costs of keeping the site afloat. They could easily go back to the old 10 minute length restriction and reduce the maximum video resolution available. Who really needs to shitpost video from their cell at 1080p resolution? Plus, most videos longer than 10 minutes are meandering and padded to hell and back.

You guys don't get it. Alphabet doesn't make any money with YT. They figured out they don't need to. What they instead get from it is that YT has the power to change popular opinion if videos are curated to people just right. That's what they are currently figuring out.
They already got your dumb ass in the google bubble, they want you more in the YT bubble as well. They want to push their agenda and train their search engine and datamining to optimize. They will take an operating loss and videos nobody watches no problem because they will get a stranglehold on public opinion on the internet in exchange. Alphabet is wealthy enough to pay the operating cost for YT for that purpose alone.

I could definitely see this being Google/Alphabet's primary reason for seemingly not caring for so long about the overhead costs of Youtube. At this point, Google search has pretty much given up any semblance of propriety about their attempts to bias search results to fuel their political agenda:
