English is apparently very hard to learn for people who don't natively speak it. Largely because of the variants and because English doesn't have as many concrete rules as German or the Romance languages.

It's dominant because of both the British Empire and now American dominance, and the only reason the Americans speak it in the first place is because British pilgrims outnumbered German pilgrims when they were deciding what America's language should be.

Yeah, not sure why anybody would claim English is easy. If it's not your native tongue, or at least taught to you early on, it's a pain in the ass to learn. Mostly because it makes no fucking sense.

I can see it being hard if you come from an entirely different language family like say Chinese or something. I found it pretty easy specifically because it has fewer rules to bother with.

If you like come across a German that can't into English, it's probably because he's ignorant and/or lazy (because our country is big enough that every important international movie and/or show gets a dub). I have seen dudes in university instinctively starting to ignore the professor's speech if we had some international guests that caused him to hold the class in English.
