I don't think that, at the time, Trey and Matt really understood the law either, they seemed to assume that if a white guy attacks a black guy, it's automatically labelled a hate crime, which as far as I understand, it isn't. Hate crime laws are an option for the prosecutor to tack on a few extra years to the sentence, mostly to give the defendant extra incentive to take the plea deal or to make themselves/their bosses look good for an upcoming election.
