The AVGN schitck has been aped and raped by every other kind of Internet "critic" on the planet. Pretty much every spectrum of every kind of method you would want to analyze old crappy games is available now, in print and video form.
James kind of hit on the right idea when he started looking at odd peripherals, the Swordquest and more obscure stuff like Sega 32X. The truly niche stuff can really reach a wider general audience better who might not know, and it plays to a part of James' psyche in that he has a fondness for the obscure and lets him throw some different directional ideas and range.
But the 8-bit NES is so ubiquitous that it really has pretty much run its course. When you see him grab it, it's pretty obvious its just goes though it because he needs a cash grab. If his 'fans' are also pandering for dumb stuff will bull semen or whatever substances and fake fighting, then he needs to ignore the hell out of him. They'll kill his brand just like any other kind of soulless "sourced" marketing. He may lose his nutjobs, but he may gain a really new audience that might like him even more. With the expanded Internet video market, that may be a good thing for him, as he could probably reach more of the audience he's always wanted now.
Mike, on the other hand, has no idea how lucky he is to just be an artist friend that Rolfe knew who was convenient for him once upon a time. Then decided to parlay that supposed attention into thinking that people really wanted to see him and change the 'r' in 'artist' to a 'u.'
I'm not sure if he's doing it deliberately, but he seems clueless enough to not know that his daily supply of shit is really and truly terrible. Either he genuinely thinks the Internet hasn't changed since 2005, or he really has no social or personality skills to speak of. His kahntent is laughably amateur beginner to Youtube quality, and arguably now even less.
When a normal, monotone guy named "Bootsy" calmly explaining how to beat a 25 year old game gives you more demand, views, and critical praise then all your videos combined, you know you suck.
tl;dr James should just make whatever he wants because that's all he's ever wanted to do, and his bottom line will actually benefit from it in the long run.
Mike is too dumb to realize he's a lucky dickrider and will kill James' Golden Goose.
...and still: Spoony did nothing.
if there's one genuine complaint I have about Mike is that he keeps setting up crossovers with nobodies that James has nothing in common with.
