Speaking of Jim Watkins, this week I felt like he was vindicated on the topic of killing Infinity Next due to licensing problems. I had to redo a file upload component to my company's software, and I went for PlUpload, which is one of the easiest and more flexible JS upload plugins that there is. Well, though shit: it is licensed under the AGPL3 license and I couldn't find a consensus on the question of if I needed to publish our own source code or not to be able to use the license. It's a fucking nightmare compared to the good old MIT license, and an example of "open" licensing autism.

I still don't understand how this is possible. Very few people will be using the site at the same time so server space shouldn't be an issue and all the site does is process shit using paypal or credit cards automatically.

Nobody invests in tech companies for a steady 5% annual profit. If they did they'd be fast food franchisees. They want 10x, 100x return. In tech terms these companies give little profit for what amounts to quite a bit of work (see below).

Fucking Dick Masterson set up a site by himself to do that shit and newproject2 is only shutting down because mastercard decided to be cunts, the cost of maintenance and staff can't be that high.

Imagine the ticket queue of furries stimming and sperging out because they didn't get the right dickgirl canine artwork for their pledge. This isn't something they can ignore (even if they effectively tell them "tough shit") because of merchant processing agreements.

But the biggest problem once you get up there in numbers is how little each of them contribute. Having 1,000,000 customers paying $1/month and you take $0.10 is a pretty shitty business to be in. Patreon itself as a middleman has limited means of increasing that monthly spend. What PledgeMusic tried to do before they went tits up was to turn their site into a crowdsourcing + a marketplace to increase revenues per user and attract new users. Downside here is that most of Patreon's biggest attractions aren't making things you can buy but dumb shit like podcasts and wank art.

That's the only real explanation I have heard, it's not that they aren't profitable since it is true incompetence if you manage to do that but dipshit investors expecting insane growth because it's "tech". It's partly why AAA gaming is fucked, moron investors say "mobile phone games make so much money with microtransactions. Why don't YOU do microsanctions for more growth?". Also this is why China has so many companies by the balls, entering the Chinese market can massively increase your growth potential hence more investors.

This explains why patreon ignores blatant fucking scams, the only real cost would be customer service so they get lazy on that knowing the feds won't do shit and people can just do charge-backs. Hence Spoony still gets his money.

But they have been growing though if you look at patreon numbers over time for most contributors. Obviously people like Spoony are the exception but most people's numbers in terms of money and users have been going up for years. I think Lupa had something like a 19% increase in the money she earned over a year, way above inflation.

RLM has seen a 363% increase in patrons since they started in 2015 though they have hidden the money though the amount per user didn't change much after the beginning so it's probably the same. Lupa has seen an increase as well:

78% over 5 years, way more than inflation though hilariously after her CTC spike she has been slowly going down. Though when I looked at a few more contributors I noticed a trend starting in 2018 where the growth, while still happening, had slowed down compared to the previous few years. That is likely why they are having issues with investors who expected it to exponentially grow forever rather than the emerging market maturing because they are moron rich kids.

RLM are the one exception to the Patreon curse; whereas every other IN who has ever joined patreon has slowed down making the content their fans crave, RLM have been pretty consistently putting out about a video a week ever since they got on patreon.
