From context, it's entirely unclear what he's even watching. He could just as easily be watching the post 2000's sequels which do suffer from sequelitis and aren't involved in the main story. Thus it's plausible someone coming into them wouldn't know the backstory since these series are predicated on everyone knowing the backstory.
