Debt cannot transfer upon death(because how many people who will their estate to people they hate as a final fuck you) , buuuut, debt can be paid by the estate. Chris isn't going to get the house. Chris will get what's left of the house after they sell it to pay Barb's crippling debt.

he CHOSE Illinois. IF he didn't like snow, keep his ass in Arizona. And a probate court is more to do with how to settle the estate's debts and assets. They have only the house as an asset. The debtors, most likely credit cards, would seize the deed/title, send in agents to assess if there's any assets in the house. If Chris was smart, he'd be able to keep most of his stuff, because only Barb's estate/possessions would go to pay her debt and he could claim his own items. But, he won't and they will take his shit too probably.
