Ben is closest to what happened. The plan was going to Jeb vs Clinton for the election. The establishment Republican party knew no one likes Jeb so they created the splitter strategy so that no one would get the majority of delegates. That's why there were originally 16 running at the time. Some were willing pawns for the strategy such as Carly Fiorna and and Rubio. While others were tricked into running with the belief they can win like Carson.

They had it all ready until Trump announced he was going to run. No one saw that coming and it wrecked the plans.

Pretty much. People who paid attention in 2016 pointed this out down to a tee who the Dem splitter was to the GOP splitter.

Difference this time is that when Bernie was heating up prior to Super Tuesday, they made sure anyone that had similarities to Biden dropped out to consolidate the vote and made sure Warren stayed on the split with Bernie. Then she dropped out after Biden won Super Tuesday. With the momentum of Super Tuesday, Biden cruised to winning the nomination.
