There are lots of situations where killing yourself is the acceptable, if not the honorable thing to do. Such as in end-of-life scenarios, or certain war scenarios. Or let's say you're a stranded astronaut running out of oxygen where no rescue is possible?

There's a difference between sacrificing yourself for a cause and just going an hero. Stranded astronaut is cute but since that's not a situation anyone has ever been in I'll just discount that. How'd you even go about killing yourself in that situation in the first place?

I'm not trying to be edgy, but in someone like Spoony's case, perhaps suicide is the proper choice? If you believe what he's saying, that he's miserable and has no joy left in his life --only fear, regret, and pain-- then maybe it's time. It could be seen as honorable because it would spare his family of being a burden.

It's a shit option because he could stop being a burden anytime. Just like that. Yes, he will lose that house. There's nothing he can do about that anymore short of winning the lottery. But objectively he's just some 40yr old single guy with bad credit. He's already better off than most divorced men his age.
Unqualified, hard labour isn't going to be outdated any time soon. If he wanted to he could sell his house, likely get some modest apartment for whatever he gets out of it or at least pay the rent for a year and go work at some fast food place or whatever. There are people that had to struggle to get there where he could be there next week. Nothing has been outside of his control and he's, objectively, far away from a situation one can't get out of. That's why I have no sympathy for him.

As for reasonable suicide, the worst thing I've ever heard was of some woman that had some rare disease where the mucous membranes are dry all the time. Dry nose, dry mouth, dry pussy but most importantly a dry colon. So every shit is like torment, pressing out a bunch of razorblades. She went to Switzerland for euthanasia because voluntary euthanasia wasn't legal in Germany back then.
I can see that if every single waking day is nothing but suffering it'd be a good call to just end it. Still, get a buddy to record your awesome jump or something. I mean you moved to Switzerland and went thought all that paper shit so is it too much to ask to do a flip, lass? Be reasonable!

I can see that. I like astronomy but space is fucking terrifying. Just imagine getting lost and adrift. You're proper and well fucked, doomed to suffocate on your endless journey to nothingness. Nobody and nothing is ever ever ever going to pick you up.

That's very much a problem of his making, innit? Nothing but a mental construct of his. In all actuality he's fine and could potentially pick himself up easily. That he doesn't do that and will never do so (which I'm more aware of than most seeing as I'm the author or the first and second law of Spoony) doesn't matter. The situation is the situation. He's generally fine. Again, better off than any divorcee his age or even DSP who is bankrupt. Picking himself up requires nothing more than getting a job - any job at all. That he's not going to do it doesn't make his situation any more daring.
If you're standing in front of a wood chipper you're not in any danger. You foolishly insisting on putting your arm into it very slowly doesn't make the situation any different. You could stop anytime. The fact that you won't doesn't make your actions any more plausible.

I really don't know what to think.
We've got 2198 pages on this guy because none of us can really figure him out. Why does a man his age act like a literal baby? Was he really spoiled as a kid, or was he born broken? I don't think even he knows.

EDIT: NASA claims the astronauts didn't use cyanide pills, but Carl Sagan insists it was true. Cosmonauts actually did carry them.
