Not that I don't think RLM deserve scorn, but some of these prequel defenses are really tired.

Any analysis that doesn't account for the fact that this franchise's shelf life has expired is by default bad, if you ask me.

I also think auteur theory has a lot of overrated aspects. "All the first six are under ONE VISION." A New Hope was saved in the edit by George's wife, something he never got over, enter special editions - and the other two were made by other guys, Lucas just produced them.

Lucas was given carte blanche for three more movies, and chose to make some sleepy, messy as hell, often boring movies. Anything I thought worked about the prequels when I rewatched was usually despite George, and rarely because of him.

The "its a kid's movie" shit kills me, too. Like he didn't fall back on that when the fucking Senate shit was badly received. "It's a kid's movie," ok, make Sonic the Hedgehog 4 about Sanic and his friends trying to lobby Congress to pass a bill, and see how that goes.

A filmmaker should have a vision, absolutely, and add some interesting analysis into whatever movie they want to make, and to create something you have not seen before, or have not seen done in a specific way. But I think the point I'm getting at is a lot of the great 'auteur' pieces have usually been flukes, and the true greats had/have more of a collaborative instinct. Like Megalopolis, Coppola's vision in that movie is completely unfiltered, and the end result kinda fuckin sucks. Any amusement that can be gleamed is archaeological.

The only praise that can be given to the prequels is that they at least tried to tell a new story, while Cuntleen's trash is just a clumsy repackaging of the OG trilogy, with a "white man bad" message as subtle as a baseball bat to the teeth.

How much of the sequel shittiness is messaging and how much is horrific laziness is the big question. Han in particular smacks of screenwriters pulling a Spoony developing the character.
