Though I seem to recall that the Watchmen characters have started as DC expys

They're Charlton characters. Basically when DC bought Charlton's characters, they wanted to do a big event with them. That eventually became Watchmen. But Alan Moore wanted to do stuff like kill them off and DC said 'No, we want to incorporate them into DC Comics later' so Moore created completely new characters based on the Charlton ones.

Nah fam. Garth Ennis. Ennis was too edgy at times, but he brought something fresh to capeshit by making it less capeshitty. Even a lot of crime movies don't have the Punisher MAX tone quite down because they don't embrace the comical/satirical level of violence Ennis does.

I know people will mention Deadpool, but Deadpool fucking sucked. It was way too self-aware and full of manufactured memes and in-jokes about capeshit you should never read. Frank never broke character and he always believed in what he was doing.



And then there's the Vietnam storyline. Ennis went all-out on this one. I hated the art in MAX after they changed from the original artist, but the final volume of MAX is fantastic. It's all about the Vietnam war. There are two storylines: One is about Frank getting revenge on the corrupt button-pushers committing atrocities under the guise of law, and the other is a sort of flashback about Frank's tour and the experience of other soldiers during the war. The two stories seem unrelated until the end, when they dovetail beautifully.



Basically, imagine Black Ops if it wasn't fucking awful.

Valley Forge, Valley Forge is the best Punisher MAX story. The mob stuff is fun and the Slavers is fantastic as well, but Valley Forge, like Man of Stone, is about something.

Ennis don't count. Ennis hates superhero comics, that's why he avoids writing them and takes the piss when he does. He writes The Punisher, and likes writing The Punisher, because he believes The Punisher is not really a superhero.
