Nobody knows when life begins exactly, because "life" is being defined as a human term. But you need some kind of blanket catch-all legal definition for the purposes of administration, and that is what we have now. I would argue life is meaningless without intelligence, but that would move the definition of "life" to exclude children already born. : DDD Which would result in even more horrific child abuse than we see today. So children today are protected under law despite their lack of intelligence.

We give a lot of rights to humans who either lack intelligence or have been deprived of it. Think of coma victims, children below the age of 3, etc. We all acknowledge to some extent the "future possibility of intelligence" among such individuals. A coma victim may wake up and regain their faculties. A child will grow up and gain intelligence. Well, if we take this line, a fetus may grow up into a child and become intelligent.

But obviously a fetus is not 1-1 a person, because the female body itself is the greatest abortionist. Pregnancies self-terminate all the fucking time. If we considered fetuses alive from the point of conception, a self-terminating pregnancy would be considered manslaughter. It's a complicated issue weighed against other complicated issues (such as overpopulation and the needs of those humans already born and walking around) and nether political side cares much for understanding or communicating the complexity.
