I like it better than Ghost in the Shell. I quickly ran out of patience with GitS's pretentious philosphising. Still a good movie though.VoiceOfReasonPast wrote: ↑Sat Jan 26, 2019 7:19 pmHaven't watched, but it's somewhere on my list. I kinda picture it being similar to Ghost in the Shell, but with gore instead of waifu.

If you think GitS is bad with that, you'll hate the sequel.

Re: The Angry Video Game Cuck
Akira is mostly remebered because of some key images and the great animation.
If you ask anyone that claims to like Akira, why they like the movie, you get the same answers, the cool bike, the blob monster by the end, and some cool scenes, like the bike chase and so on and forth.
But aside from that, i don't see a lot of people mentioning the story, characters, fuck, aside from Kaneda and Tetsuo, I doubt anyone even recalls any of the other characters... does anyone remember the name of the chick with powers that tries to stop Tetsuo by the end?
And that is the problem with Akira, the story tries to be grand but it is a fucking mess,it has bland character, hookey dialogue.
All kudos for being ambitious and some master class animation craft, for sure, but aside from that, there isn't much else to Akira.
here, i'll sum the movie for you:

That is all people remember from the movie.

I haven't seen it, but I saw Ergo Proxy. Awful. Just awful - the definition of pretentious. Whatever it was supposed to be just sunk into nothingness as less and less made sense and in return made me more apathetic.Rapeculture wrote: ↑Sat Jan 26, 2019 7:38 pmI quickly ran out of patience with GitS's pretentious philosphising. I don't mind when something goes chaotic or crazy when I am still interested and keep asking questions when I know I'll at least get some answers. The problem with pretentious storytelling is that they'll quickly show that they don't have any interesting answers.

It's mostly about wowing the audience with your supposed deepness, really.
It's almost like they tried to cram too much of the manga into too little runtime.

I actually have Ergo Proxy on DVD, but haven't watched it yet. The art direction is what sold me on it. Sad to hear that it sucks. Some Sick Fuck wrote: ↑Sat Jan 26, 2019 7:49 pmI haven't seen it, but I saw Ergo Proxy. Awful. Just awful - the definition of pretentious. Akira has very good visuals, not much besides that, it’s just a mess of a movie and the manga is even worse in case someone is wondering.

Yeah, the manga is like 2000 pages long or something. They probably tried to adapt the more visually intresting bits, story be damned.VoiceOfReasonPast wrote: ↑Sat Jan 26, 2019 7:54 pmIt's mostly about wowing the audience with your supposed deepness, really. It's almost like they tried to cram too much of the manga into too little runtime.

First ever anime I ever watched, must have seen it about 6 times but I haven’t watched it for a whileCredo in Deum wrote: ↑Sat Jan 26, 2019 7:09 pmDid anybody watch Akira? Re: The Angry Video Game Cuck
That's because he tried to condense the much longer manga into a movie and mashed shit together. All the characters actually develop in it and it's drastically different from the movie and significantly better. It made me like the movie a whole lot less since what I thought was some vague grand storytelling was actually Otomo cutting shit out like crazy to get this long TV series length story into a movie. There is nothing vague about the manga at all and it's brilliant, I don't know what Bobito is on about.rpgworm wrote: ↑Sat Jan 26, 2019 7:45 pmAkira is mostly remebered because of some key images and the great animation.

Much more so than usual, it's night and day because it was so poorly condensed down.Rapeculture wrote: ↑Sat Jan 26, 2019 7:15 pmI never read the manga, but I hear it fully fleshes out the story. But I mean, that's pretty much par for the course when it comes to anime adaptations of manga.
