Because I really liked the books, I'll elaborate If Gollum was anything like our king Spoopy, we would be looking at entirely different plotline - Bilbo would never find the ring, because Spoollum would be lying dead somewhere in a cave, rotting away, because he has spend couple of decades ranting about local orange leader and was too lazy to find himself something to eat.

And I think everything that has to do with Gollum's physique is explained as a mutation caused by prolonged exposure to the ring, and frankly, I've never liked how he looked in Peter Jackson's trilogy. Either way, he was supposed to be muscles and bones, unlike Spoony, who is just fat and bones.
